In it I will tell you what you need to buy to do this and, just as importantly, what you do NOT need but people will try to sell you anyway and then I will move on to how to fit it. The procedure was performed on a Swift Sport UK right-hand drive model. However, I have seen photos of this procedure done on a left-hand drive USA model so the procedure is the same. Many sellers will try to sell you a complete fitting kit, with a trim panel, cage, bezel, adaptor plates, screws, connector adaptor, and ISO-to-DIN aerial adaptor. You do NOT need all this! The only things you actually need are the trim panel top right in the photo and the connector adaptor bottom of the picture.
The Swift already has a DIN aerial so no aerial adaptor is needed. The cage and adaptor plates shown in the pic are simply not needed. The connector adaptor show in the picture includes a breakout box for the steering wheel controls the dark grey box. The seller should include a patch cable specific for the manufacturer of your stereo which plugs into this. The blue connector is compatible with the Suzuki wiring plug, and the two black connectors are ISO connectors which are industry standard for connecting up stereos.
Before you start bear in mind that, once disconnected, your factory-fit stereo will not work again without the security code. The cage that holds the factory stereo is only held in with two bolts. But getting to them is the trick. Firstly, remove the glove box. This involves opening it and then deforming it so the lock stops as indicated by arrows in the pic slip past the plastic that they stop against — not unlike opening a child-proof container.
This is simply clipped in place and pops off fairly easily. Looking up inside, you will be able to see the bolts securing the mounting cage — one on each side. Undo these bolts. I used a screwdriver with a flexible shaft which helped a lot. These are the only two you need to remove. Once the two bolts are removed, you then need to unclip the fascia panel. Using a trim removal tool or a large flat-head screwdriver, very very! Do be very careful so as not to scratch the heater control panel.
After successfully unclipping the fascia, the stereo should then slide out forwards.
You might find that the wires are too short to fully pull it out, but if you snip the cable tie that holds them then there is much more wire and it should come out cleanly. Disconnect the wiring connector and aerial connector.You left your headlights onand your battery went dead. In most cases, fixing a car stereo that quit working after the battery died is a lot simpler than that.
There are a few different reasons for a car radio to stop working after the battery has gone completely dead. In certain rarer cases, you may be dealing with a damaged radio or even damage to other electrical systems other than your radio. For instance, if your radio stopped working after a botched jump start, the radio—and other delicate electronics—could have been fried. Car radio codes are meant to act as a sort of passive anti-theft feature.
When power to the radio is cut, the feature kicks in, and when power is returned, the unit is basically bricked until you enter a specific code. That means car radio codes almost overwhelmingly become headaches for the lawful owners of those car radios, instead of the thieves they are meant to inconvenience.
The best way to deal with a car radio code is to not deal with it at all. If you bought your car used, the previous owner may have written the number down in the manual, and some manuals actually have a place to do so. If your car radio stopped working after a jump start, or after a battery charge, then the problem might still be related to a car radio code anti-theft feature.
The biggest danger in jump-starting or charging a battery is actually related to the explosive nature of the hydrogen gas that can leak from a lead-acid battery. This is why the final cable you hook up should always be a ground cable, and it should be hooked to ground, rather than the battery.
If you hook directly to a battery, and any hydrogen gas has leaked from the battery, the resulting spark could ignite the gas and cause an explosion. If the cables were hooked up backward at any point, and your radio stopped working as a result, then the radio may well be fried.
And quite aside from your radio, any number of other components could also be fried. Unlike people, who may spend their entire lives in search of a purpose, fuses are born into this world with the sure and certain knowledge that they will one day die to save another. In the case of your car radio fuse, it is designed to sacrifice itself to prevent a dangerous amount of current from flowing through your car radio and the associated circuit.
In other cases, you may find that a fusible link has blown, or that a wire somewhere has melted. In other far more serious scenarios, you may find that other electronic components, right up to and including your extremely expensive electronic control unit, may have also been damaged. When two things happen at exactly the same time, it's easy to just assume that they are related. And in the case of dead batteries and dead car radios, there's a definite chance that the problems are related. However, you may find that your car radio suddenly quit working for a totally unrelated reason.
For instance, if your radio turns on and displays a station, but no sound comes out of the speakers, then it's probably an issue with the speakers or the wiring or even the antenna. In that same vein, a car stereo with a non-functioning radio may be tracked down to an antenna problem if other audio sources, like the CD player, work just fine. Tweet Share Email.
