We get the question all the time if it's an advantage or disadvantage. We feel like it's both. If you're racing on primarily slick or smaller race tracks, we feel it has advantages. One is just the fact that the engine is less responsive due to the flat tappet cam, it's almost like it has a built-in restrictor plate. On a slicker surface this will have drivability advantages. Then on top of that the rules allow the car to have a one inch taller spoiler. From wind tunnel testing adding one inch on top of the deck is not near the advantage that adding a one inch spoiler to an existing five inch would be.
The taller the spoiler is like having a multiplier to the higher it is off the deck. In our opinion, this has potential to help a car quite a bit in the right situations. Then, the car gets to come in 50 lbs. In our opinion this advantage has the least potential for gain but it does help if you can get the percentages right on the car and lose the weight as well. All the advantages listed would be disadvantages in other situations.
For example, on big racetracks where maximum power is needed, the concept is down approximately 30 horsepower compared to open spec. On heavy surfaces less spoiler would be an advantage.

Oil Pan Included:.The crate engine has been around for quite a few years now and has truly impacted the racing world. The idea of the crate engine was to give racers another option that was cheap, competitive, and easy to tech.
I feel this was accomplished for the most part. When you buy a new GM crate engine it will require a few parts to make it a race ready engine. You will also need a Fuel Pump Mounting Plate because this engine comes with a fuel pump block off plate that could be used if you are utilizing a belt driven fuel pump.
The only other items you will need to get your engine ready to drop in the car are an oil filter, spark plugs, and spark plug wires. We have found over the years that there are a few different items that can produce more horsepower in the crate engine. Plug wires will also be needed for your new crate engine. There are also a few other quality options available through Moroso, Scott, Taylor, and Accel. When it comes to the crate motors headers are a big part of the performance since they play a large role in the amount of torque they put out.
Long tube headers are also recommended as they will increase the backpressure and ultimately the torque of the engine. Some racers will even install reducers or mufflers to their long tube headers to take this effect even further. Going from a standard Chevy claimer engine headers in most cases will be the same.
The main difference is the rear crank hub.
This is because the block is one of the newer externally balanced engines that were built up. Not only will the flex plate need to be different, but the same goes for your clutch button flywheel or your flywheel depending on your application.
Speedway Motors offers multiple different part numbers for the GM crate engine. This engine would be a good option for those that race in unsanctioned events where additional seals are not required.
